GaYBOR District Makes Lemonade
While striving to put UNITY into our CommUNITY,  we shared our Tampa Bay CommUNITY with the World GLBTA CommUNITY , The GaYBOR District Coalition has made lemonade out of the lemons dealt to us in the year 2009. As the Coalition tripled in size, the power of working together & compromising shined threw, taking the Tampa Bay CommUNITY to a higher level.

Looking Back at 2009
What a year 2009 was. This is a small highlight of this past years top stories. GaYBOR District Coalition’s 1 second year quadruples in membership now at 270 . Wow… What a difference a year makes. New GLBT club/store openings in the area include; Tampa Social Club, Tampa Eagle, Tribeca Colorsalon, Joffrey’s Coffee Shop, Agora Furnishings, Hamburger Mary’s, Flamingo Hotel, and Ybor Resort & Spa. Major events in the community a couple come to mind. What a day for St. Pete Pride’s Promenade. Over 100,000 in the Stonewall event attendance. The 2nd Annual GaYBOR Days in July had acclaimed stature being recognized for the achievements with 3 government proclamations. One from the Tampa City Council, Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners and Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio. It was a full week of activities. The 20th Anniversary of Tampa International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival broke record attendance. A National Gay March on Washington in October had over 300,000 attending. A large number of bus loads of ralliers represented Florida. A new state organization was formed to work with all GLBT groups, OUT (Organizations United Together). A local NBC affiliate, WFLA TV 8 station opted to air a homophobic hateful infomercial for the American Family Association on St. Pete Pride day. They received a lot of hate mail and was picketed with hundreds of GLBTA protest marchers.
Some of the firsts included Tampa first newly appointed lesbian Police Chief Jane Castor, Newly elected gay St. Petersburg City Councilman Steve Kornell, and of course taking the oath of Hillsborough County Commissioner at the beginning of the year , gay advocate  Kevin Beckner.  Tampa Bay Business Guild  chose Mark & Carrie to receive  the Citizens of the Year Award.
We lost a many great friends including. Rex Maniscalco - photographer and GLBT genealogists. Jim Riis - school teacher and Log Cabin political activist.

From: don@kingcoronacigars.com
Subj: Ferlita Macaroni Factory building

I would like to thank all concerned parties with the reprieve regarding the razing of the Ferlita Macaroni Factory  building. My appreciation goes to Dennis Fernandez and Ron Vila. If the other side had been as prepared as Dennis and Ron, I’m afraid that we might not have been victorious with the decision handed down by the Barrio Latino Commission. I was extremely impressed by the City’s thorough presentation and it was apparent that Dennis, Ron, and staff had put in a lot of hours toward saving this important component of Ybor City’s wonderful history.
I would also like to thank all of the public who attended and spoke in favor of saving the building. It is extremely difficult, in these trying economical times, for people to take time off from their busy schedules and work to do something positive for something so worthy of our attention.
Lastly, and certainly not least, I would like to give thanks and appreciation to the Barrio Latino Commission for their difficult task of carrying out the duties of their volunteer positions as caretakers of our wonderful historic district buildings. I’ve never served on the Barrio Latino Commission, but I’m sure it is a thankless task. Their decisions greatly affect all of us and with every decision, there is probably always someone who walks away feeling as though they’ve been treated unfairly. As the years pass by, my appreciation for this body has grown considerably as has my love and appreciation for this wonderful place called Ybor City.
We must find the right solution for The Ferlita Macaroni Factory, one that is right for the building and right for the community. Thank you, Don Barco

TAMPA BAY HOSTS MAJOR NETWORK TV PILOT

Fox Television Studios recently filmed portions of a TV pilot, Sugarloaf, in the Tampa Bay area. Fox hopes to develop Sugarloaf as a series shot entirely in the Tampa Bay area.

“This production brought an infusion of economic impact into the Bay area in just a week’s time,” said Film Commission Manager, Lindsey Guthrie.  “Imagine the impact a TV series such as this would have on our local economy. This couldn’t come at a better time.”

Crabby Bill’s Beach Club and Morris Bridge Wilderness Park, part of Hillsborough County’s parks system, were featured locations in Hillsborough County. Additional locations included a Pinellas County golf course, a private home in the Broadwater neighborhood and the Crystal Springs Roller Rink.

If picked up, the series would run on the A&E network beginning summer 2010 and would tell the story of a Chicago cop who moves to Florida to play golf and winds up working as a troubleshooter for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The Tampa Bay Film Commission works closely with Tampa Bay & Company and community partners to market Tampa as a premiere destination for film and commercial production.

Rumors from GaYBOR in Historic Ybor City

People are Talking
The rumors are flying around Ybor these days! Inspired by the Positive, CAN DO attitude of the GaYBOR District Coalition, the start of the new year looks like a very busy & Fabulous start!!!! Last week we saw the opening of Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille in Centro Ybor.  The month before we saw the opening of Tribeca Colorsalon , Joffery’s Coffee & Agora Furnishings. This week the rumors were that another famous GLBT restaurant bar chain is taking a serious look at GaYBOR. 2 new restaurants will be opening soon on and off 7th Ave.  An investment group from Key West are talking about opening a guest house/club on 7th Ave in GaYBOR. There are also 2 other guest house locations being talked about by other investors. There is a national internet company looking to re locate its operations in GaYBOR. They would be bringing 80-100 new jobs to Ybor City.   In March, the Metro Charties will be opening next to the Hampton Inn & Suites on 7th in the major multi-million dollar renovated century old Sans Sounci Theatre Building. Combining two locations in to one headquarters. There is also finalizing talks of a pharmacy moving in. The very popular HG TV will be here in Ybor  this Saturday. Shooting the last 3 hour interview and hopefully will be shooting a episode here. The re decoration show will put a gay couple against a straight couple. The GaYBOR Coalition is busy working on the spring break festival, “Southern Exposure” with big name entertainment and amusements in late Feb & “GaYBOR Day’s” in July. GaYBOR is also kicking off a national advertising campaign on Facebook & working together with Tampa Bay & Co to bring 2 major conventions to Historic Ybor City in 2011!!!! WOW… looks like a very bright future for 2010!!!! Remember when in Historic Ybor City look for business that Proudly display the GaYBOR Stickers in their windows. Why would you want to do business anywhere else?

PS and that’s just the rumors we could leak……
